What to Know About Building a Shed on a Budget

Do you, like so many people have a garage or storage room that is overflowing with tools, outdoor gear, and gadgets? Regardless of what your clutter is from, having an outdoor shed might just be the answer that you have been looking for to solve your storage problem.

Unfortunately, extra space does come with an extra cost. The reality is that prefab sheds can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. But, what if you had the knowledge that would allow you to build a quality shed that could solve your storage problems without breaking your budget? Here are five tips to help you do just that.

Stick to What You Need

Did you know that the average custom-made shed can cost anywhere from £2,000 to £3,500? Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this expensive. So, how exactly can you keep your shed budget well under the average cost of a custom-made shed? Well, to start, cut out the frills and fancy aspects. This means cutting out things like:

  • A large footprint
  • Ramp
  • Electricity
  • Built-in storage
  • A loft
  • A built-in workbench
  • Decorative trim

When budgeting it is also important to remember that skilled labourers, such as carpenters and electricians can charge well over £50 an hour. In other words, if you are able to avoid adding these extras and avoid hiring a professional for more time than necessary you can keep the costs significantly lower.

Remember, we are talking about building a cheap shed. This means, a foundation, a roof, and four walls.

Do Your Research and Shop Around

Have you given any thought to where you might get your materials? Odds are you have thought about going to a big box store. But what about getting materials that someone else is throwing away? There is always someone that has too much of a material who wants to get rid of their extra stuff and reclaim their space. If you are able to connect with someone with extra materials you might be able to get them for cheap – or even free!

Always Rent Power Tools Instead of Buying Them

Unless you are a professional builder or handyman odds are you don’t own every power tool that you will need to build a shed. Depending on your shed design you will need different tools, these might include:
